It was costly to give clean chit to rebel MLAs in Telangana, notice to Speaker after SC’s rebuke, what is the whole matter

A big case of contempt has been registered in Telangana politics. In this, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad. The country’s Supreme Court took this tough step today when BJP MLA Maheshwar Reddy filed a petition accusing the Speaker of contempt of court. It is alleged that the Speaker has flouted the clear instructions of the court and the contempt law by giving a clean chit to the rebel BRS MLAs.

The bench took notice of the speaker and asked for his reply.

The case was heard before the bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Augustine George Masih. Taking cognizance of the petition of the BJP MLA, the bench issued a notice to the Speaker and sought his reply. The petitioner argues that the Speaker, despite reserving the decision in the disqualification case, acquitted the rebel MLAs, which amounts to interference in the jurisdiction of the judiciary.

During the hearing, the court also clarified that this petition of Maheshwar Reddy was against BRS leader and former minister K.T. Will be tagged with the first petition filed by Rama Rao (KTR) in the same case.

Clouds of crisis looming over membership of MLAs

In Telangana, clouds of crisis were looming over the membership of many MLAs who had defected from BRS and joined Congress. This matter was pending during the previous government, but as soon as Gaddam Prasad became the new speaker, he freed these rebel MLAs from the show-cause notice. This move was termed as an attack on democracy by the opposition. Now both BJP and BRS are separately challenging this decision of the Speaker in the Supreme Court.

Disqualification case of 12 rebel MLAs in headlines

The issue of disqualification of 12 rebel Congress MLAs was in the news during the time of the then Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy in the BRS government. However, the Supreme Court then heard the case and gave time to the Speaker to take a decision or issued directions, but a notice of ‘contempt of court’ was not issued. Interestingly, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy is also now included in Congress. The Supreme Court has now postponed the next hearing of this case to February 6, for which the entire state is eagerly waiting.
