No change in import duty of gold and silver
The existing custom duty structure on gold and silver imports has been maintained in the Union Budget 2026. The rates announced last year still remain intact. A total duty of 6 percent will be imposed on import of gold in all forms, which includes 5 percent Basic Custom Duty (BCD) and 1 percent Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC).
Import of silver by Indian residents will also continue to attract 6 percent tax, which includes 5 percent BCD and 1 percent AIDC. However, silver imports by non-Indian persons will continue to attract a higher duty of 36 per cent, which includes 35 per cent BCD and 1 per cent AIDC.
The central government had reduced the customs duty on gold and silver bars from 15 percent to 6 percent from July 24, 2024, in the interim Union Budget 2024. The Union Budget 2026 has maintained these low rates, thereby providing continuity and policy stability for the precious metals market.
The Union Budget 2026 has now extended this tax system for another year, till March 31, 2027, thereby providing continued relief to the sector.
What is Basic Custom Duty (BCD)?
Basic Custom Duty (BCD) is a standard tax levied by the Indian Government on goods imported into the country under the Customs Act, 1962. It is imposed to regulate imports, protect domestic industries and generate revenue for the government.
