A case of misbehavior with a brave soldier who lost both his legs for the country has come to light at Sasthana Toll Gate in Kundapur, Karnataka. The video of this wheelchair-bound soldier being insulted by toll employees is now going viral on social media, after which anger and resentment is being seen across the country.
The victim soldier has been identified as Shyamraj, who is a resident of Edaniru village in Kasaragod district of Kerala. Shyamraj has served as a commando in 21 para military unit of the Indian Army. He was injured during Operation Parakram, in which he sacrificed both his legs for the country.
Shyamraj told his pain
In the video, Shyamraj explains his pain in Hindi and says, ‘I am Army Commando Shyamraj. I have served in 21 Para Military. Near Sasthana Toll, Udupi I am being harassed to pay toll. I have all the valid documents related to toll exemption. I am a war victim and am tax-free under the Army Act. I have not paid any toll in the entire country, but only here I am being stopped forcibly. He further said, ‘Do you know why I am sitting on this wheelchair? Is it right to insult a war victim? Toll is being collected from the soldiers fighting for the country.
Question asked to Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari
Shyamraj also questioned Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and said that it is extremely shameful for a soldier, who is completely free from toll charges, to be stopped like this. On this matter, the employees of Sasthana Toll Gate say that they were not aware of this exemption and they were working as per the instructions of their superiors. However, soldier Shyamraj gave a strong reply to this and said, ‘If there was a soldier in your house too, you would have understood our pain. We are not happily sitting in a wheelchair. After this video surfaced, a lot of anger is being expressed regarding the attitude of the toll employees. People are criticizing the toll administration on social media and demanding strict action against the culprits.
