The results of Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Elections 2026 have created a new stir in the politics of the state. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed happiness over the excellent performance of his party. Terming the victory of 125 councilors (corporators) in 13 municipal corporations of the state as historic, he made it clear that his party has no intention of going with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the opposition ‘India’ alliance.
Owaisi bluntly said that his fight is for those who have given him the mandate, and not for the manipulations of power.
‘Social engineering’ formula for victory
Asaduddin Owaisi, while addressing the media in Hyderabad on Saturday (January 17, 2026), gave the credit of this victory to his party workers and voters. He especially emphasized that AIMIM is no longer a party of only one class. He said, ‘I am thankful to Allah. Many of our Hindu brothers, including Dalit, Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, have won on our party’s ticket.
It is noteworthy that this time AIMIM has emerged as the second largest force after BJP in strongholds like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (33 seats) and Solapur, while in Mumbai (BMC) also the party has hoisted its flag on 8 seats.
Attack on alliance on allegations of ‘no-entry’ and ‘B-team’
Owaisi appeared quite aggressive on the allegation of ‘B-Team’ often made by opposition parties. He said, ‘I have no remedy for such allegations. Those who call us the B-team are actually insulting the millions of voters who voted for us. If you disrespect the public mandate, your downfall is certain.
Completely rejecting the possibilities of alliance, he gave the example of Akot. Owaisi gave strict instructions to his councilors not to be part of any group in which BJP is included. He reminded that party discipline is paramount, as shown earlier by Imtiaz Jaleel by suspending a member for supporting a BJP candidate.

Owaisi also admitted his shortcomings with the honesty of an editor. He said that he is sad that he could not pay more attention to Western Maharashtra. He expressed confidence that if more time had been given, the results could have been even bigger. While consoling the losing candidates, he said that fulfilling the promises made is more important than victory. He said, ‘Winning is a difficult task, but living up to people’s expectations is an even bigger responsibility. I appeal to all our corporators to remain connected to the ground and serve the public.
The elections of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra were held in January 2026 after a long wait. These elections were being considered as a ‘litmus test’ before the 2029 assembly elections. By more than doubling its previous tally of 56 seats (125), AIMIM has proved that it has strengthened its hold in the urban bodies of the state, especially in the regions of Marathwada and Vidarbha.
