Serious questions have once again been raised on the quality of mid-day meals in government schools of Telangana. The latest case is from Malatummeda village of Nagireddypet mandal of Kamareddy district, where 8 students suddenly fell seriously ill after having lunch in a government primary school (Boys Primary School). After this incident, there was a stir in the school premises and the children were hurriedly taken to the hospital.
According to the information received, like every day, midday meal was served to the students in the school on Wednesday also. Shortly after eating food, many students complained of severe stomach pain and nausea. Within no time the condition of 8 children started deteriorating. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the school staff immediately admitted the children to the government hospital at Ellareddy with the help of an ambulance and local vehicles.
Treatment of all children continues
According to the doctors of the hospital, prima facie it seems to be a case of ‘food poisoning’. At present, treatment of all the children is going on and their condition is said to be stable. As soon as this news spread in the village, a large number of parents ran towards the hospital and school. A huge anger is being seen among the family members against the education department and the agencies making mid-day meals. Parents allege that due to lack of regular checking of food quality, the lives of innocent children are being put at risk.
This is not the first case of negligence in food in government schools in Telangana. Even before this, reports of insects being found in food or contaminated food being served have been coming to light from different parts of the state. This incident of Malatummeda has once again exposed the monitoring process of the administration.
Police started investigating the case
After receiving information about the incident, local education officials and police have started investigating the matter. Samples of the leftover food in the school have been sent for lab testing. Villagers and public representatives have demanded that strict action should be taken against the mid-day meal workers and the concerned monitoring officers responsible for this negligence so that children’s health does not get compromised in the future.
