In the very first year of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had retired from Test. After the poor performance of the Indian team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, some reports said that there are differences of opinion between the senior players and the head coach on some issues. Gautam Gambhir in his latest statement indicated that perhaps he could not handle his relationships with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma the way he wanted. When he was asked about this, he said that he is also a human being, he should also be allowed to make mistakes.
In Revsportz Conclave, Gautam Gambhir was asked, ‘You had tweeted that some people are trying to instigate the players against you. Obviously this was about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. You share a dressing room, win matches together for Team India. When it is said that you are against a senior player like Virat or Rohit. This must be creating pressure. How do you deal with all this? How do you face these comments?’
Gautam Gambhir said, “I am also a human being and I should also be allowed to make mistakes. Players and I too are allowed to make mistakes. I too may have made many mistakes in the last 18 months. I have never denied them, but I believe that if the intention is right then a wrong decision is acceptable but not a decision taken with wrong intentions. Everyone should be allowed to make mistakes.”
Gautam Gambhir made it clear that honesty matters most to him. He said that as long as he is behaving honestly with every player in the dressing room, he feels that he is fulfilling his responsibilities with full honesty.
Gautam Gambhir said, “As long as I am doing my work honestly, behaving honestly with everyone from the masseur to the assistant coach in the dressing room, then I feel that I am fulfilling my responsibility with full honesty.”
