Lost Smartphone in Train: If your mobile phone gets lost or stolen in a train or station while travelling, now the hope of getting it back has increased much more. To help the passengers, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have jointly taken a big step.
RPF linked to CEIR portal, recovery will be easy
RPF is now officially linked to the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal of DoT. This is a digital platform with the help of which the IMEI number of a lost or stolen mobile phone can be blocked. Due to this, the phone not only becomes useless, but its tracking also becomes possible.
The pilot project of this system in Northeast Frontier Railway has already been successful. Now it has been implemented on the Indian Railways network across the country, which will directly benefit millions of passengers.
Big leap of digital technology in railway safety
During the launch and training program of CEIR portal, RPF Director General Manoj Yadav said that this partnership with DoT is an important achievement for railway safety. With the use of digital technology, passengers will get a transparent and reliable method of mobile recovery, which will further strengthen people’s trust in Railways.
The phone will become useless as soon as the IMEI is blocked.
Through CEIR portal, RPF will now be able to immediately block the IMEI number of a lost or stolen mobile phone. If this happens, the phone can neither be used nor sold illegally. Along with this, as soon as the phone is activated on the network with a new SIM card, its information will be available to the system.
RPF’s confidence shown even before Operation Amanat
RPF has already been active in returning the lost luggage of passengers. Under Operation Amanat, between January 2024 and February 2025, RPF has recovered lost items worth more than Rs 84 crore and returned them to more than 1.15 lakh passengers. Now with the addition of CEIR, mobile phone recovery is expected to become faster and more effective.
Where and how to complain about lost mobile
If your mobile is lost during a train journey, you can lodge a complaint online on the Rail Madad platform or call 139. If you do not want to file an FIR then the process of filing a complaint on the CEIR portal will be explained to you.
The entire process will continue like this until the phone is received.
After the complaint is registered, the zonal cyber cell of RPF enters the details of the mobile on the CEIR portal and blocks its IMEI. As soon as the phone is seized with a new SIM, the user is asked to submit the phone to the nearest RPF post. The original owner can get his phone back by showing the necessary documents.
If no one cooperates, an FIR is registered and the case is handed over to the district police. After receiving the phone, the owner can also request to get the IMEI unblocked through the CEIR portal.
Big relief to passengers due to implementation across the country
After the success of the pilot project started in May 2024, this facility has now been implemented in the entire country. RPF believes that this initiative will not only curb mobile theft but will also help passengers get their phones back quickly and safely.
