Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Assam for the Assembly Election campaign on Wednesday, visited a tea garden in Dibrugarh, where he also interacted with workers and plucked tea leaves.
PM Modi spoke about how tea is intertwined with Assam and how it has made a name in the global stage.
“Tea is the soul of Assam! The tea from here has made its way across the world. This morning in Dibrugarh, I went to a tea garden and interacted with women working here. It was a very memorable experience.”
Sharing glimpses of his visit to the tea garden, the Prime Minister said, “We are very proud of the efforts of each and every tea garden family. Their hardwork and perseverance have enhanced Assam’s pride.”
“The plucking of tea leaves was followed by the women talking about their culture and of course a selfie,” the PM said.
Tea cultivation in Assam
Assam has a long history of tea cultivation, dating back to the early 1800s. Today, Assam accounts for nearly half of India’s tea production.
Assam’s Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Jorhat, produce an estimated 650–700 million kg of tea every year.
Assam’s tea industry is one of the largest employers in the region and a major economic engine, employing over 6.84 lakh workers directly. Tea plantations and related businesses also contribute nearly 5% of Assam’s GDP.
Modi confident of hat-trick
The polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
Earlier, while addressing a public rally in Assam’s Gogamukh, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the development of Assam under the BJP regime and described the previous ten years as an “era of service and good governance.”
The Prime Minister expressed confidence in achieving a “hat-trick” of victory in the state.
Modi promises Uniform Civil Code in Assam
Modi also vowed to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Assam, while reiterating the state government’s commitment to protecting tribal traditions, Sixth Schedule areas and preserving Assam’s identity.
Modi said that several key decisions have been taken to ensure dignity, safety and equal rights, particularly for women.
“To ensure that no deceit is done to our daughters, many major announcements have also been made to ensure the dignity, respect, and safety of our daughters’ lives. Implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Assam and protecting the traditions of our tribal society, Sixth Schedule areas, or saving Assam’s identity are very big announcements. The BJP does what it says,” he said.
