Congress MP Shashi Tharoor criticized the central government for changing the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ and said that the government is only focused on changing the name and not on projects. Tharoor also said that Kerala is already translated as ‘Keralaam’ in Malayalam. In such a situation, questions are now being raised on the intention of changing the name of the state.
Tharoor said, “In Malayalam it is already ‘Keralaam’. Now a Malayalam word is coming into English. I don’t know what difference it makes. The government has neither given us AIIMS nor any new institute. There is no project even in the Union Budget, but when it comes to changing the name, they are ready to approve it.”
Questions were also asked regarding language
Tharoor also raised a linguistic question in a separate post on X. He asked what would now happen to the terms Keralite and Keralan used for the residents of Kerala? He stressed that ‘Carlamite’ sounds like a microorganism and ‘Carlamian’ sounds like a rare mineral.
Let us tell you that the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi on Tuesday approved the proposal to change the name of Kerala to ‘Keralaam’ before the state assembly elections. Elections in Kerala, which has 140 assembly members, are expected before May. However, the Election Commission has not yet announced any official date of the elections.
CM had demanded to change the name
The Kerala Assembly has already passed a proposal to change the name in official records. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had presented this proposal in 2024 and had demanded the Central Government to change the name of the southern state of Kerala from Kerala to Keralam in all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He had said that the demand for a unified Kerala for the Malayalam speaking communities has been rising since the time of the national freedom struggle.
