On the incident of throwing shoe towards former CJI, SC asked Center and SCBA to tell how to stop it.

On the incident of shoe being thrown towards former Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, the Supreme Court has sought suggestions as to how such incidents can be prevented from happening in future. On Wednesday (December 17, 2025), the Supreme Court has asked the Central Government and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to give suggestions in this regard.

The court is hearing SCBA’s petition in which SCBA President and Senior Advocate Vikas Singh had appealed to initiate contempt proceedings against lawyer Rakesh Kishore who threw a shoe at the former CJI. However, the court said that Justice Gavai himself did not escalate the matter and now issuing contempt notice to Rakesh Kishore is giving unnecessary importance to it and escalating the matter.

The court had said that we should pay attention to such measures so that such incidents do not happen in future. The bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, while hearing the matter on Wednesday, also sought suggestions to prepare a standard operating procedure (SOP) for reporting such incidents in the media.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared in the court on behalf of the Centre. The bench has asked Tushar Mehta and SCBA President Vikas Singh to give suggestions to set guidelines in this regard. CJI Surya Kant said, ‘Tushar Mehta and SCBA President have jointly said that they will submit joint suggestions on the steps that can be taken to prevent such incidents in future and the procedure to be followed for reporting and broadcasting such incidents.’

Rakesh Kishore had tried to throw a shoe towards former CJI Gavai during the court proceedings on October 6. During this he also raised slogans. When he was taken out of the courtroom, he was saying – India will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan. On November 12, Justice Surya Kant had asked the lawyers present on behalf of SCBA to give their suggestions, because the court is considering preparing guidelines in this regard across the country. He had said, ‘Think of giving three-four suggestions to prevent such incidents at places like court premises and bar chambers. All of you please give suggestions.

Due to this act of lawyer Kishore, the Bar Council of India (BCI) had suspended his license with immediate effect. This incident was widely condemned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also spoken to Justice Gavai condemning the incident.
