Voting was held on January 15 for 29 municipal corporations of Maharashtra, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). After this, the results started coming on Friday (16 January 2026) and gradually it became clear that the ‘king’ of Maharashtra is BJP-Shiv Sena. However, if we look at Muslim dominated seats in this election, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM has given a big blow to Congress and NCP (SP).
Owaisi’s influence on Muslim dominated seats
Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM has won 95 seats in 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. AIMIM surprised everyone in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Malegaon. 24 candidates of AIMIM have been elected in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and 20 of its candidates have been elected in Malegaon. Malegaon is a Muslim-dominated area with a total of 84 seats and is considered a traditional stronghold of Owaisi’s party. Here BJP has lead on only 2 seats, Shinde’s Shiv Sena has lead on 18 seats and Congress has lead on only 3 seats.
AIMIM spoiled the game of Congress-NCP
AIMIM has won 8 seats each in Solapur, Dhule and Nanded, taking its total to 24 seats in these three municipal corporations. Although AIMIM could win only 7 seats in Mumbai and its candidate is ahead on one seat, but the party completely spoiled the game of Congress and NCP (SP) here. AIMIM has 6 councilors in Amravati, 5 in Thane and 4 in Nagpur. AIMIM has also won 1 seat in Chandrapur. Two candidates of Owaisi’s party won from Jalna Municipal Corporation.
Thackeray brothers got a big shock
‘Thackeray Brothers’ (Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray) have suffered a big setback in these elections. Shiv Sena-UBT and MNS alliance lagged behind in most of the seats. ‘Thackeray Brothers’ were hopeful of uniting ‘Marathi Manush’ in the elections. The coalition faced a tough challenge in maintaining its decades-long hold on the city. BJP alliance also has lead in Nagpur, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pimpri Chinchwad and Nashik.
