Air India flight AI2812 going from Mumbai to Bengaluru returned to Mumbai airport on Thursday (April 9, 2026) about 20 minutes after takeoff. According to the airline, a technical fault was suspected in the plane, after which the pilot decided to return to Mumbai as a precaution. This was done as per the rules laid down by the airline. The plane landed safely and technical investigation is currently underway.
Pilot gave ‘pan-pan’ call
According to officials, when one engine stopped in the air, the pilot gave a ‘pan-pan’ call on the radio, after which the plane was landed safely. This flight was scheduled to take off at 2:05 in the morning, which took off at around 2:15, but returned to Mumbai shortly after and landed safely at around 2:35. The PAN-PAN call is an internationally recognized emergency signal used in aviation and maritime communications. This indicates a serious situation, which requires immediate action. However, it is not as serious as MAYDAY emergency.
Claim of many flaws in Air India aircraft
A report by the European Aviation Safety Agency claimed that several security flaws were found after a surprise inspection of Air India planes at European airports last month. The airline has faced repeated scrutiny from India’s aviation regulator regarding maintenance and engineering standards.
Air India spokesperson said, ‘We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers. Our teams at Mumbai airport provided immediate assistance and an alternate aircraft was arranged for flight operations. The safety of passengers and crew is our top priority. In future also, all safety rules will be followed in such cases.
