President’s rule removed from Manipur, new Chief Minister will take oath after some time

President’s rule has been removed from Manipur on Wednesday (4 February 2025) after almost a year. President’s rule is in force in the state from 13 February 2025. The 60-member Assembly was suspended after President’s rule was imposed. The tenure of the assembly is till 2027. Newly appointed BJP legislature party leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh reached his home after staking claim to form the government to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

Khemchand will take oath as Chief Minister

In the presence of 35 out of 37 BJP MLAs, besides party’s central observer Tarun Chugh, North East in-charge Sambit Patra and BJP state president A Sharda Devi, Y. Khemchand Singh was elected the leader of the legislature party on Tuesday (3 February 2026). Khemchand Singh can take oath as Chief Minister on Wednesday.

Which party gets how many seats in Manipur?

Currently BJP has 37 MLAs in Manipur. 32 BJP candidates had won in the 2022 assembly elections. JDU had won six seats, out of which five MLAs later joined BJP. Of the other MLAs, six are from the National People’s Party (NPP), five from the Naga People’s Front (NPF), five from the Congress, two from the Kuki People’s Alliance, one from JDU and three are independent.

BJP’s decision after several meetings

Over the past few months, the BJP central leadership held several rounds of meetings with its Meitei and Kuki MLAs, allies NPF and NPP and some independent MLAs to ascertain whether the political situation was favorable for government formation. President’s rule was imposed in the state on 9 February 2025 after the resignation of N Biren Singh from the post of Chief Minister. His resignation came amid months of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Who is Yumnam Khemchand Singh?

Khemchand Singh, a taekwondo player, was elected to the Manipur Assembly in 2017 and 2022 from Singjamei assembly constituency as a BJP candidate. Earlier, he had served as the Speaker of Manipur Assembly from 2017 to 2022. He was appointed cabinet minister in the second government of Biren Singh in 2022.
