Fresh unrest was reported on Wednesday (December 24, 2025) and clashes broke out between police and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters during a protest in Kolkata against the killing of a Hindu Bangladeshi youth. The clash began when police stopped the BJP march before it reached Howrah Bridge, leading to a heated argument between the protesters and security personnel.
A senior Howrah Police officer told PTI, ‘We will not allow anyone to disrupt the normal life of the people and harass the passengers in the name of protest. We will take action as per law to stop any attempt to create trouble.
As soon as the police stopped the march from moving forward, the protesters tried to break the barricade by sitting on the road, which led to clashes. BJP leaders and workers were marching towards Howrah bridge on Wednesday morning, but police stopped them before reaching the bridge. The area was cordoned off and when the protesters sat on the road and started raising slogans, the police took action to disperse them. Police allege that the protesters became aggressive due to which the security personnel had to take action to disperse them.
Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, was beaten to death by a mob on December 18 in Baluka, Mymensingh district of Bangladesh on charges of blasphemy and his body was set on fire. On Tuesday, hundreds of people tried to march to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission to protest against attacks on minorities in the neighboring country but were stopped midway by the police, leading to clashes and several people being injured.
The rally had started from Sealdah and was heading towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission office at Park Circus, but was stopped by the police at Beck Bagan area. When the protesters tried to break the barricade, the police chased them away with baton charge.
