A bail petition was filed in the Shillong court on behalf of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, which has been rejected by the court. Sonam Raghuvanshi is currently lodged in the District Jail of Shillong. Sonam is accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi.
In the bail petition filed by Sonam, it was told that Sonam was arrested from Indore on 9 June 2025. This arrest was made on the basis of the FIR registered on June 3, 2025, which was registered at Sohra Police Station. The FIR was registered after the body of deceased Raja Raghuvanshi was recovered. Since then Sonam Raghuvanshi has been continuously in jail and has been in custody for more than six months.
What was said in the bail petition?
It has been argued on behalf of Sonam that the entire case rests on circumstantial evidence and the prosecution’s claim is based on an alleged love affair. It has also been said in the bail petition that Sonam was happy about her marriage and she herself had actively participated in the wedding preparations like shopping and other arrangements. In such a situation, no concrete motive for murder emerges. The defense has also argued that mere suspicion cannot replace evidence, no matter how strong it is.
Sonam Raghuvanshi has told the court that the trial may take a long time because 180 documents and many evidences are to be presented in the case. Due to being in jail for a long time, he is facing mental stress and his social image has also got spoiled. Also, she is a woman accused and the law also has a provision for concession on bail in women’s cases. However, even after hearing all these arguments, the court rejected the bail petition.
