Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is going to break the record of D. Devaraj Urs, who has been the longest serving Chief Minister of the state, on Wednesday (January 7, 2026). On Monday (January 5, 2026), he attributed this historic achievement to the blessings of the public. During this, he also gave a big statement regarding his achievement, citing the examples of cricketer Virat Kohli and Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar. He said that records are made only to be broken. Urs served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka for 7 years and 239 days.
At the same time, Siddaramaiah will complete 7 years and 240 days in his post as Chief Minister on Wednesday (January 7), which will cross the period of Urs. Highlighting a key difference between him and Urs, Siddaramaiah said that while Urs belonged to the ruling class, he came from a socially backward community (Kuruba or shepherd).

Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, CM Siddaramaiah said, ‘With the blessings of the public, tomorrow on Tuesday (January 6), the record of late D. Devaraj Urs, who was the longest serving Chief Minister of Karnataka, will be broken. It is a matter of pride that both I and Urs are from Mysuru.
When asked about the possibility of breaking Urs’ record, Siddaramaiah said that records are meant to be broken. Giving the example of sports, he compared his achievement to Virat Kohli breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record in cricket.
I had not even imagined of becoming a minister- Siddaramaiah
When asked if he had ever thought that he would be able to break this record, Siddaramaiah admitted that he had not even imagined becoming a minister, leave alone becoming the Chief Minister. He said, ‘I just thought that after becoming a Taluk Board member, I would become an MLA. I have won eight elections so far. I have lost two parliamentary elections and two assembly elections. In my life I have contested a total of 13 elections including Taluk elections.
There is no comparison between me and Urs- Siddaramaiah
When asked about his comparison with Urs, he said, ‘Devraj Urs was not socially backward. In fact, he belonged to the ruling class. He belonged to a community which did not have much population, but he was a popular leader.
The Chief Minister said that there is no comparison between him and Urs. The era of Urs was different from the present and Devraj Urs had contested elections by collecting money directly from the public. He said, ‘In the year 1962, people gave him money and voted in his favor. Now times have changed.
