The Supreme Court on Tuesday (February 10, 2026) dismissed the charges related to caste-based violence against Anand Rai, who exposed the Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh. Anand Rai had challenged the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which had upheld the framing of charges against him under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in a case related to violence and abuses against an MP, MLA and government officials during a rally in 2022.
According to PTI report, Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice N. Of. While delivering the verdict on Anand Rai’s petition, Singh’s bench said, ‘We have considered the scope of the SC/ST Act and this action is not in accordance with the law. The appeal is accepted.
Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Sumeer Sodhi appeared on behalf of Anand Rai, an ophthalmologist from Madhya Pradesh and one of those who exposed the Vyapam examination scam. The incident took place on 15 November 2022 in Dharar village of Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh, where a program was organized to unveil the statue of Lord Birsa Munda on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
The allegation was that Anand Rai had stopped the vehicles of an MP, an MLA, District Magistrate and other officials. In the FIR lodged by a person named Vikas Pargi, it was said that a group blocked the road for about an hour, misbehaved with the public representatives and scuffled with the policemen who had come to clear the road.
Names of about 40 to 45 people including Anand Rai were registered in the FIR. Ratlam’s Special Sessions Judge (SC/ST Act) had framed charges against Rai on March 18, 2025. Earlier, on January 13, 2023, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Anand Rai in this case and later stayed the ongoing hearing under the SC/ST Act.
