While talking to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on December 15, US President Donald Trump said that I think we are now closer than ever to stopping the war. He told that he had very long and very good talks with Zelensky as well as with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and NATO. He gave this statement after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders.
Ukraine should get protection like Article 5 of NATO
Ukrainian President Zelensky spoke to Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner for the second consecutive day. This conversation was based on Trump’s initial proposal, which aimed to end the war. European leaders have proposed that a multinational force be deployed to enforce the peace agreement.
This will be part of the strong security guarantee supported by America. From America’s side, Ukraine can be given protection like Article 5 of NATO, that is, an attack on one will be considered an attack on all.
America will create ceasefire monitoring system
This system will monitor ceasefire violations and warn of future attacks. Ukraine’s army can number 8 lakh soldiers in peacetime and will continue to receive significant military support. Zelensky praised America’s new security guarantees, but said there are still differences of opinion on the question of leaving the areas.
Trump believes that Ukraine will have to give up some territory to Russia, but Zelensky is not ready to accept this.
Putin wants to capture areas of Ukraine
An American official said that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to occupy these areas of Ukraine. America wants Ukraine to retreat from Donbass area (Donetsk and Lugansk), but Ukraine is refusing. Russia currently controls almost the entire area of Lugansk and 80 percent of Donetsk.
As of now, no agreement has been reached on Ukrainian territories and there has been no response from Russia on the new proposals. Negotiations are ongoing and US officials are saying that the offer of security guarantees will not last forever.
Ukraine will not become a part of NATO
Trump has already said that Ukraine will not join NATO. Trump had cited Kiev’s NATO ambitions as the reason for Russia’s attack. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described Trump’s recent talks as ‘the possibility of a real peace process’ and called US security guarantees ‘important’.
