The Supreme Court on Tuesday (January 6, 2026) granted interim bail to alleged Naxal supporter Kailash Ramchandani in the sensational case related to the death of 15 policemen in a blast caused by an ‘improvised explosive device’ (IED) in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra in 2019.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) alleged that his hands were stained with the blood of policemen, but despite this, the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi granted him interim bail with various conditions.
Keeping in mind the fact that Ramchandani was in jail since his arrest on June 29, 2019, the bench granted bail with several conditions. These also include the condition that he will remain in his native place Gadchiroli and will not be able to go out without the prior permission of the special NIA court.
The bench said he can go out of Gadchiroli only for hearing in the special NIA court in Mumbai and he will have to report to the local police station once every week. Apart from this, the accused will have to give his mobile number to the police and he will not request any adjournment in the ongoing hearing of the case.
The bench clarified that if it is found that the accused had tried to contact Naxalites in the area and has violated any of the bail conditions, then the NIA can request for cancellation of the interim relief.
Ramchandani had challenged the Bombay High Court’s order rejecting his bail plea on March 5, 2024. He had argued that he has been in jail since 2019 and charges have not been framed yet in this case and the co-accused have been granted bail.
Initially, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the NIA, opposed the bail plea saying that the accused had an important role in the case related to the murder of 15 policemen. The law officer said that the blast was carried out through IED only after receiving information about policemen going to a specific place.
Opposing the petition, Bhati said that the special court is hearing the case and many important witnesses are yet to be examined. But the bench said that the accused is a businessman and has been in jail since 2019.
