SC strict on allegations of fraud in Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association elections, stays results

In an important intervention, the Supreme Court on Thursday (January 8, 2026) stayed the ongoing elections of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). The Supreme Court took serious note of allegations of fraud, back-dating of orders and manipulation of electoral lists against members of a sub-committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

These elections were conducted by the court appointed election officer, former Chief Election Commissioner Shri A.K. Were being done under the supervision of Jyoti. The Supreme Court intervened when the petitions alleged that the sub-committee had colluded and issued backdated orders and illegally changed the electoral list, thereby damaging the integrity of the electoral process.

The bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta said that if these allegations are true, then they attack the very foundation of a free, fair and transparent election. Considering the seriousness of the allegations, the Court issued notice to the respondents and directed that the election results, if any, would not be declared until further orders.

The Court stressed that sports bodies, especially those operating under judicial supervision, are expected to strictly adhere to the principles of transparency, impartiality and rule of law. The bench indicated that any attempt to manipulate the electoral processes would come under strict scrutiny.

The petitioners were represented by a legal team led by Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora and comprising Advocate-on-Record Soyeb Qureshi, Advocate Sheikh Faraz, Advocate Chetna Alag and Advocate Aman Qayoom Wani. It is expected that the matter will be heard further after the respective parties file their replies, in which the Supreme Court will examine the legality of the disputed actions and the sanctity of the JKCA electoral process.
