Such cases have started increasing in recent times
According to media reports, scams through QR codes have increased rapidly in the last few months. Such attacks are named Quishing Attacks. Even though this name is new, the method of scamming is old. In this, scammers put a fake code on the real QR code. As soon as a user scans these, instead of a menu opening on his screen or a payment page opening, he will be redirected to a fake website. This website steals the user’s name, phone number, email address, banking details and password etc. In many cases, it can also install malware on the user’s device.
How to avoid such scams?
- If you see any kind of discrepancy in the QR code sticker, then avoid scanning it.
- If the QR code sticker pasted in the restaurant appears to be torn or torn, then scan it only after verification.
- Never scan QR codes posted in parking or other open spaces.
- If someone sends you a QR code through message or email and asks you to make payment on it, then be cautious.
- Similarly, if after scanning a QR code, banking password, full card number or account password etc. are asked, then be careful. Usually scammers ask for such extra details.
