Banking and realty remained stable. Overall, investors appeared to be in a cautious mode. Investor sentiment was visible for selected stocks. Markets closed on a flat note amid cautious positioning, stock-specific action and limited triggers on the first day of the New Year.
After the market closed, benchmark indices like Sensex and Nifty showed a slight decline. At the close of the first session of 2026 at 3:30 pm, the Sensex was down 32 points or 0.04 per cent at 85,188.60, and the Nifty was up 16.95 points or 0.06 per cent at 26,146.55. It remained largely limited throughout the session. FMCG shares put pressure on the market amid heavy selling in ITC. However, gains in auto, IT and select heavyweight stocks like Larsen & Toubro and NTPC kept the benchmark index in the green.

Top gainers on Nifty included Eternal, NTPC, Bajaj Auto, Shriram Finance, Wipro, while fallers included ITC, Bajaj Finance, Dr Reddy’s Labs, ONGC, Tata Consumer.
