An important resolution was presented in the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday i.e. 5 February 2026. It has been claimed that 107 people died due to fear and panic of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal.
SIR became the order of death
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shovandeb Chattopadhyay has presented the proposal under Rule 169 in the West Bengal Assembly. It has been said in the proposal that in the name of revision of voter list before the upcoming assembly elections, an atmosphere of fear and insecurity has been created in the state. According to the proposal, a large number of people are facing the fear that their names might be removed from the voter list. It has been claimed that 107 people have lost their lives due to this mental pressure and anxiety. These also include cases of suicide.
Government wants to bring NRC through SIR: Mamta
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has claimed that 3 to 4 people are committing suicide every day due to fear of SIR. He has described SIR as a back door to bring NRC. He alleged that the Central Government and the Bharatiya Janata Party are targeting Bengal. The state government alleges that the Election Commission is not playing an impartial role in this matter and is working at the behest of the Central Government. CM Mamata Banerjee said that the Election Commission and the Central Government should take moral responsibility for these deaths.
Mamta government wants to take electoral advantage: BJP
BJP has completely rejected these allegations and said that Trinamool Congress (TMC) is deliberately spreading rumors among the people so as to gain electoral advantage. The deaths cited by TMC are individual incidents and it is wrong to give them a political colour. BJP also says that SIR of voter list is a normal and regular process, which is wrong to be linked with fear.
