Indian cricket team’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has achieved great success in recent times. Under his coaching, India has won two big ICC titles like ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026. With this, Gambhir has become the first Indian coach to have won two ICC trophies in such a short period of time.
However, former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that Gambhir’s real test is yet to come. According to Ganguly, the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027 will be the tournament where Gambhir’s strategy and leadership will be real tested.
2027 World Cup will be a big test
Ganguly said in an interview that Gambhir’s biggest test in white ball cricket will be in the ODI World Cup 2027. This tournament will be played in South Africa and the conditions there are considered quite challenging. He said that the pitches and weather of South Africa test the true potential of the teams. However, Ganguly is confident that Gambhir can perform well with the current team.
Still remember the defeat of 2023
The Indian team performed brilliantly in the 2023 ODI World Cup and reached the finals. The team remained undefeated in the entire tournament, but had to face defeat against Australia in the title match. This is the reason why the 2027 World Cup is considered very important for India.
Last chance for Kohli and Rohit?
Ganguly also said that the 2027 World Cup could be the last chance for the two veteran players of the Indian team, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In such a situation, the pressure on the team to win the trophy will be even more.
Test cricket needs improvement
Ganguly also admitted that the team is performing well in white ball, but there is still a need for improvement in Test cricket. According to him, the team should worry less about the pitch and focus on playing better cricket. Gambhir Wicket will have to be removed from his mind. He said that if matches are played on good pitches then the team can achieve better results.
Gave full support to Gambhir
However, along with the warning, Ganguly also praised Gambhir. He said that Gambhir is a good coach and he should be given time to work.
