Cyber security becomes very important amidst increasing cases of cyber crime. That is why users are advised to constantly use a unique password and change the password from time to time. If you are still using passwords amid the ever-increasing threats of data leaks, then you are behind the times. Password is not enough to protect against hacking and data leakage. Today we are going to tell you why you should use passkey instead of password.
Companies are emphasizing on passkey
Fast Identity Online Alliance (FIDO) developed Passkey a few years ago and now many companies have started implementing it. In August last year, Microsoft removed password support from its Authenticator app and added passkey support to it. Similarly, Amazon is also insisting on using passkey.
What is passkey?
When a public key and a private key are combined, they together create a passkey, which unlocks your account. If you look at the way it works, your unique public key is stored on websites and apps, while your private key is stored in your password manager on your device or in iCloud Keychain if you are an Apple user. After this, when your device authenticates your identity, when your private and public key together unlock the account.
What are the benefits of Passkey?
Passkey has many benefits at once. Like a password, the passkey cannot be guessed nor can it be shared. Apart from this, since there is a unique password for every site, it can also prevent phishing attempts. The biggest thing is that today when no data is safe, the passkey cannot be stolen by breaking into the company’s server or database. This makes it safer for you than a password.
