In the case of stray dogs, the Supreme Court has said that generally so many petitions are not filed even in cases related to humans. On Tuesday (January 6, 2026), the Supreme Court said this while taking cognizance of the number of interim applications being filed before it in the case of stray dogs. Two advocates raised the issue of stray dogs before the bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta.
The lawyer told the bench that he has filed an interim petition in this case, to which Justice Sandeep Mehta said, ‘Normally such a large number of petitions are received even in cases involving human beings.’ The court told the lawyer that the hearing in the stray dog case is to be held on Wednesday. When another lawyer mentioned the transfer petition in this case, the bench said that several petitions will be heard on Wednesday and the bench will listen to all the lawyers.
According to PTI report, the bench of Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria is going to hear this case. In November, the court had expressed concern over the increasing cases of dog bites in public places like educational institutions, hospitals and railway stations. The Court had directed that the stray dogs be immediately shifted to designated shelters after proper sterilization and vaccination and the captured stray dogs shall not be released back to the place from where they were captured.
The court had also directed the authorities to remove all cattle and other stray animals from state highways, national highways and expressways. The court said that recurring incidents of dog bites in institutional areas, including sports complexes, not only reflect administrative apathy, but also highlight the systemic failure to secure these complexes from preventable threats.
The court had taken suo motu cognizance and issued several instructions in the case of stray dogs. The court is hearing a suo motu case initiated on July 28 last year in connection with media reports of spread of rabies, especially among children, due to the bites of stray dogs in Delhi NCR.
