Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant has expressed strong objection to the inclusion of a chapter on ‘Corruption in Judiciary’ in the NCERT book. As soon as the court proceedings began on Wednesday (February 25, 2026), he said, ‘I have taken cognizance of the matter. No one will be allowed to defame the judiciary. The case will be heard soon.
The Chief Justice gave this information when senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi raised the matter before him. The Chief Justice said, ‘Lawyers and judges all over the country are worried about this. I have been receiving calls regarding this since yesterday. Rest assured, I will play my role as the head of the judiciary.
NCERT’s new Class 8 Social Science book mentions ‘corruption in the judiciary’ and ‘high burden of pending cases’ as the main challenges. Referring to the case in the court, Kapil Sibal said, ‘We are all members of the judiciary. We are deeply disturbed to learn that Class 8 children are being taught about corruption in the judiciary. This is completely insulting. After this, Singhvi also said that it is wrong to present corruption selectively in this way. It is being shown as if corruption exists only in the legal profession.
After this the Chief Justice assured the lawyers that he was fully aware of the issue. He has received calls and messages from many High Court judges and other people. The Chief Justice said that he has already passed the order and is taking suo motu cognizance of the matter.
The Chief Justice, sitting on the bench with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, said that it appeared to be a ‘deliberate and premeditated’ action. He said that he does not want to say anything more than this right now. The Chief Justice said, ‘I will not allow anyone to tarnish this institution. Whoever it is, the law will take its course. I know how to deal with it.
