According to the rules of Vilayat-e-Faqih, the Iranian Constitution, only a great religious scholar i.e. Maulvi can get the post of Supreme Leader of Iran. It is being told that Ali Khamenei had not decided the name of any successor in his life.
Who will be the successor after Khamenei?
In such a situation, the names of two people are emerging in the race for the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the first name of which is Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, while the second name is of Hassan Khomeini, grandson of Iran’s founder Ayatollah Khomeini.
According to the report of news agency Reuters, at present no person has authority like Ali Khamenei. That is why it will be a big challenge for any successor to gain control over powerful institutions like IRGC and big religious bodies. Iran’s ruling power is decided by the Council of Experts, which includes 88 senior clerics.
The Council of Experts officially chooses the new Supreme Leader, but behind the scenes the real power lies in the hands of the power brokers who run the country’s system. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) operates outside the jurisdiction of Iran’s elected government and is directly accountable to the Supreme Leader.
IRGC’s role is important
IRGC is the most powerful and most hi-tech military branch of the country. According to Reuters, IRGC commander Mohammad Pakpur was also killed in Saturday’s attacks. Experts believe that IRGC will play an important role in shaping the future of the Islamic Republic. The current President of Iran, Masoud Pejeshkian, is considered a liberal, but his position is not clear yet. The role of the Revolutionary Guards will be most important when Iran comes to power.
