Tamil Nadu News: In the last two years, 142 people have died due to slipping and drowning while bathing in water bodies in Thanjavur district. This information has been given by District Fire Officer Kumar. This figure is extremely worrying and raises serious questions about water security in the district. Especially during holidays and weekends, an increase in such incidents is being seen.
Danger increased after release of water from Kallanai
Rivers, ponds and wells in Thanjavur district are filled after the release of water from Kallanai on June 15. Water bodies filled with water look beautiful and attractive. Fog remains till 9 in the morning and after that bright sunlight comes out, due to which people are drawn towards these places for bathing and walking. This attraction is often proving fatal.
People who know how to swim get excited after seeing the water, but those who do not know how to swim also get excited and get into the water. Due to deep water and strong current they get trapped and lose their lives. At this time, the amount of water in the rivers is high and the flow is also fast, due to which the danger has increased further.
Administration’s warning, yet negligence
The district administration is continuously giving instructions that no person should bathe in the river, wash clothes or bathe cattle. Despite this, people are not following these instructions. Due to this negligence the number of deaths is increasing. Fire officer Kumar said that deaths in water bodies are more than deaths due to fire in the district.
The fire department is running a large-scale awareness campaign in schools and colleges. Special emphasis is being laid on teaching children to swim. The officer says that swimming is an important life skill and learning it can save many lives. The biggest danger is to enter water bodies without knowing how to swim.
Special attention is necessary for children and youth
Ponds, wells and pits in mines are extremely dangerous. Children who go to play after seeing the beauty of water, enter into it and become victims of an accident. Therefore, during holidays, parents should keep an eye on where their children are playing. The youth should also avoid jumping into the river in excitement and should understand the responsibility of their family.
These incidents have come to the fore in areas like Kumbakonam, Tirukkattuppalli, Papanasam, Thiruvidaimarudur, Orathanadu, Peravurani and Thiruvaiyaru of Thanjavur district. The district administration alone cannot stop these deaths. For this, public cooperation is very important. If people follow the rules and take precautions, these accidents can be reduced to a great extent.
