Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu became the model state of the country in the matter of organ donation, but there was a decline in this matter.

Tamil Nadu News: Everything ends after the death of a person, but organ donation is such a medium through which a person can remain alive in the lives of many people even after death. Government, social organizations and voluntary organizations are continuously making people aware about organ donation. Its effect is now clearly visible. The number of organ donors is increasing across the country and Tamil Nadu has emerged as an example in this matter.

Increase in the number of organ donors in Tamil Nadu

In the last few years, there has been a continuous increase in the number of people donating organs after death in Tamil Nadu. The special thing is that the biggest reason behind this increase has been the understanding and consent of the family and relatives of the deceased.

If we look at the figures of the last five years, it becomes clear that awareness regarding organ donation has increased rapidly among the people.

  • 2021: 60 deceased donated organs
  • 2022: 156 deceased donated organs
  • 2023: 178 deceased donated organs
  • 2024: 268 deceased donated organs
  • 2025: 240 deceased donated organs

Which organs and how much were donated?

In Tamil Nadu, organs of 60 people who died in 2021 were donated. In this, hearts were donated to 52 people. Lungs were donated to 68 people. Liver was donated to 58 people. Kidneys were donated to 100 people.

In 2022, organs of 156 people who died in Tamil Nadu were donated. In this, hearts were donated to 85 people. Lungs were donated to 98 people and liver to 142 people. Kidneys were donated to 276 people. In Tamil Nadu, organs of 178 people who died in 2023 were donated. In this, 70 hearts, 110 lungs, 142 livers and 313 kidneys were donated.

In the last 2024, organs of 268 people who died in Tamil Nadu were donated. In this, heart was donated to 96 people, lungs to 89 people and liver to 210 people. Kidneys were donated to 456 people. Current Organs of 240 people who died in Tamil Nadu in 2025 were donated. Heart was transplanted to 65 people, lungs to 86 people, liver to 201 people and kidney to 409 people.

Decline in heart and lung donations a matter of concern

Although the number of total organ donations has increased, there has been a decline in heart and lung donations. The percentage of heart donation was 86.67% in 2021, which decreased to 27.08% in 2025. Similarly, lung donation was 56.67% in 2021, which will increase to 17.91% in 2025.

The statistics of liver and kidney donation are relatively better. Kidney donation was 83.34% in 2021, which increased to 85.21% in 2025. Liver donation also remains at 83.75% in 2025 from 96.67% in 2021. These figures show that awareness regarding organ donation has increased in Tamil Nadu, but there is still a need to spread more understanding regarding donation of vital organs like heart and lungs. If people come forward and consider organ donation as a means of donating life, then thousands of patients can get a new life.
