The Supreme Court of America canceled the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on different countries, calling them illegal. Soon after, Trump announced a 10 percent global tariff. Meanwhile, Tariq Rahman’s government said on Saturday (21 February 2026) that Bangladesh will review its trade agreement with the US after the Trump administration’s arbitrary tariffs are cancelled.

Bangladesh’s decision regarding trade deal with America

Khadija Nazneen, official secretary of the WTO wing of the Commerce Ministry of Bangladesh, said in an interview to The Daily Star that now we will first analyze the trade agreement with the US and then take a decision. He said that there is also an exit clause in the Bangladesh-America trade agreement. This is a condition in the agreement under which both the countries can end the agreement as per pre-determined rules.

He said, ‘Exit clause is mentioned only in the case of Bangladesh. There is no mention of this clause with any other country with which America has signed an agreement. This is why we will take decisions as per government policy. Under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus, Bangladesh had signed a trade agreement with America on 9 February.

Big statement from Commerce Ministry official

According to the report, an official of the Commerce Ministry of Bangladesh said that due to the decision of the US Supreme Court, the trade agreement between the two countries has been cancelled, which means that America’s decision will no longer apply to Bangladesh. He said, ‘We will soon discuss this in detail and take necessary action. There is a possibility of the agreement with Bangladesh being canceled because the entire agreement has been cancelled.

Bangladesh was one of the few countries that signed a Reciprocating Trade (ART) agreement with the US on February 9, reducing reciprocal tariffs from 20 per cent to 19 per cent. America is the biggest export destination of Bangladesh. The interim government had signed an agreement with the Trump administration to ensure market access. This trade deal was criticized a lot because it was a one-sided agreement.

How much tariff did America impose on Bangladesh?

US President Donald Trump had announced reciprocal tariffs under the national emergency on April 2, 2025. Initially 37 percent tariff was imposed on Bangladesh, which was later reduced to 35 percent. After negotiations on the trade deal, it was reduced to 20 percent and after the agreement to 19 percent.
