Bogura-6 constituency: Bogura-6 (Sadar) parliamentary seat has been vacated by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President and Prime Minister Tariq Rahman. He won the elections from two seats. He gave up a seat a day before taking oath. Now by-election will be held on this vacant seat. The discussion has intensified in the party regarding who will be the candidate this time.
From 1991 to 2008, BNP candidates kept winning the Bogura-6 seat by a huge margin in every general election. In the elections of 1996, 2001 and 2008, late party president Khaleda Zia had registered a landslide victory on the ‘Paddy Hair’ election symbol. In the 13th parliamentary elections held on 12 February, BNP President Tariq Rehman won a big victory from the same seat.
Election Commission has not announced the date yet
The Election Commission has not yet announced the date of the by-election. But the discussion is going on in the party as to who will be made the candidate. Some people are suggesting that ticket can be given to Tariq Rehman’s wife Zubaida Rehman or his daughter Jaima Rehman.
Names of local leaders also in discussion
Names of some local leaders are also emerging as candidates. These include the names of Bogura district BNP president and former mayor of Bogura municipality Rezaul Karim (Badsha), former district president and former mayor AKM Mahbubur Rahman, former district president Saiful Islam, former Bogura-7 MP Helaluzzaman Talukdar and BNP media cell convenor Maudud Hussain Alamgir (Pavel).
Party high command will decide
In this matter, Bogura district BNP’s acting general secretary and Bogura-4 MP Mosharraf Hussain said, “The candidate for the seat vacated by BNP President and Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has not been decided yet. When the date of by-election is announced, then the party leadership will announce the name of the candidate on time.”
He further said, “Bogura-6 and Bogura-7 seats are considered to be the seats of Zia family. Earlier, Khaleda Zia had won a big victory on both the seats. In this election, the party president has also won with a huge vote. Only the party president will decide whether a member of the Zia family or any other leader will be the candidate in the by-election.”
