What are Semiconductors: In the era of Artificial Intelligence, India is also continuously emphasizing on this area. In this direction, the government has today taken a big step in the Budget 2025–26 to strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem of the country. About Rs 40,000 crore has been announced for the semiconductor sector in Budget 2026. The objective behind this is to take India’s technology and manufacturing capacity to new heights.
In fact, semiconductors are at the root of most of the electronic items on which our everyday lives depend. They look like small chips or black squares, but in reality they run every system by becoming electronic circuits, sensors and control units. Their role is important everywhere, from smartphones and home appliances to cars, communication networks, medical machines, railways and power grids. If there is a slight defect or delay in supply, then everyone from common people to the industry can be affected. This is the reason why semiconductors have become not just an industrial product but the foundation of modern society.
Government gave Rs 40 thousand crore in the budget
The government has given a budget of Rs 40 thousand crore for semiconductor. During the speech in Budget 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government is now going to launch ISM 2.0. The objective of this initiative is to manufacture semiconductor equipment and devices, develop full-stack design capabilities, promote Indian intellectual property and strengthen the country’s supply chain.
This investment of Rs 40,000 crore is considered very important in many ways. Supply chain disruptions across the world, geopolitical tensions and rapidly growing demand for semiconductors in AI, electric vehicles, 5G and 6G telecom, defense sector and consumer electronics have made this sector even more strategically important. At such a time, this investment will help in strengthening India’s high-tech manufacturing capabilities.
What are semiconductors?
Semiconductor is actually a very small but very powerful electronic chip which is usually made from elements like silicon or germanium. In simple words, this chip gives any electronic device the ability to think, understand and work. Computers, laptops, smart TVs, mobile phones, cars, electric and electronic gadgets, digital cameras, communication equipment, train systems and even ATM cards all contain semiconductors. The control system and memory of any device works through these chips. This is the foundation of electronic circuits and the surprising thing is that inside a chip smaller than a fingernail, there are billions of very tiny switches which process data in the blink of an eye.
Miracle of semiconductor hidden inside smartphone
Today’s smartphones contain not dozens but hundreds of semiconductor devices. System-on-a-Chip i.e. SoC, which is called the brain of the phone, is the most important chip. This chip works fast together with all the parts like memory, camera, sensors and network.
When you open the camera and take a photo, the SoC gives commands to the camera module. The image sensor converts light into electrical signals which the SoC processes into clear, sharp and color-correct images. During this time, the high-speed RAM temporarily handles the data and finally the photo is saved in flash memory. Also, the power management IC ensures that each chip gets as much power as is required. Because of this coordination, photography, gaming and AI features look so smooth on mobile.
Why modern civilization cannot run without semiconductors
Be it exchange of information, proper use of electricity or operation of transport system, semiconductors play an important role everywhere. This is the reason why today they are considered not just technology but the basic structure of modern society. Without them, neither smartphones will work, nor smart homes, nor the wheel of the digital world will be able to move forward. In today’s era, mobile phones and vehicles have become more hi-tech than ever before and semiconductors play an important role behind all these advanced features.
In cars, these chips are used to control heads-up displays, different types of sensors, connectivity with mobile and communication systems and smart elements of the engine. Driver safety related features like driver assistance system, parking rear camera, blind spot detection, airbags and emergency braking are also not possible without semiconductors. Today, these chips are being used in almost every car present in the automobile market. It is difficult to imagine a modern car without them. Same is the situation with mobile phones where processor, camera, network and battery management everything depends on semiconductor.
why is it so precious
Semiconductors are considered so valuable today because the entire world of modern technology depends on them. Their demand is increasing rapidly in almost every industry. Semiconductors are essential for fast data processing and storing large amounts of information in technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. These chips make superfast computing and powerful memory possible. Apart from this, semiconductor industry is also being considered as a strong base for future economic development because today there is no area left where it is not used.
