The chessboard of local governance has been laid in Telangana. Taking a big step towards the much-awaited civic elections, the state government has officially finalized the reservation structure in 121 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations of the state.
In a high-level meeting held on Saturday at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) headquarters, Director (Secretary) of the Municipal Administration Department T.K. Sridevi made this reservation list public. The biggest headline of this time’s elections is the historic 50 percent reservation given to women, which will take women’s participation in state politics to a new peak.
According to the official announcement of reservation, the social equations for the posts of mayor in 10 major municipal corporations have been carefully considered. In this, one seat has been allotted for Scheduled Tribe (ST), one for Scheduled Caste (SC) and three for Backward Class (BC).
Kothagudem Corporation reserved for ST category
Talking about specific allocation, Kothagudem Corporation has been reserved for ST category, while SC General candidates will lead in Ramagundam Corporation. A strong signal has been given to Backward Class (BC) politics by reserving Mahabubnagar Corporation for ‘BC Women’, while BC General candidates will contest in Mancharial and Karimnagar corporations.
How many seats for general women category
Apart from corporations, clear division has also been made into 121 municipalities. Here a total of 5 seats belong to ST, 17 seats to SC and 38 seats to BC categories. Underlining the supremacy of women, the government has reserved important corporations like Greater Hyderabad (GHMC) as well as Khammam, Nalgonda and Nizamabad for the ‘General Women’ category. At the same time, Greater Warangal Corporation has been kept open for ‘General Candidates’, where the contest is expected to be the most interesting.
This announcement is being considered as a turning point for Telangana politics. In these elections of 2026, 50 percent women quota is not only a statutory requirement, but it is also a big effort to change leadership at the grassroots level. Experts believe that this reservation policy can spoil the equations of many big political houses, because many seats considered ‘safe’ have now gone into the reserved category.
