PM Modi held delegation-level talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein at the Al-Husseinia Palace in Amman on Monday (December 15, 2025), but today we will tell you about the Indian woman who got married in Pakistan and after that she even became the Crown Princess of Jordan.
Who is that Indian woman?
The name of the Indian woman we are talking about today is Princess Sarwat L. Hassan, who also has an interesting and deep connection to the Indian subcontinent with the Jordanian royal family. Princess Sarwat L. Hasan was born in Kolkata in 1947, just weeks before the partition of the country during the British era, into the Suhrawardy family, an influential Bengali Muslim family. His original name is Sarwat Ikramullah. His father Mohammad Ikramullah was an Indian Civil Service (ICS) officer and later became the first Foreign Secretary of Pakistan. His mother Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah was one of the first female parliamentarians of Pakistan and also served as ambassador to Morocco.
Born in India, married in Pakistan
Sarwat was educated in Britain and brought up in an international environment during his father’s diplomatic postings in Europe and South Asia. At the same time, at diplomatic events in London, he met Prince Hassan bin Talal of the Hashemite dynasty of Jordan for the first time.
After this, on August 28, 1968, Sarwat Ikramullah married Prince Hassan bin Talal in Karachi, Pakistan. The wedding ceremony was a unique fusion of Pakistani, Jordanian and Western traditions. After marriage, the couple settled in Amman and had four children, Princesses Rahma, Sumaya and Badia, and one Prince Rashid.
Crown Princess of Jordan for 31 years
Sarwat L. Hassan was the Crown Princess of Jordan from 1968 to 1999. During this period, she did remarkable work in the fields of education, social welfare and women empowerment. After this, in the year 1999, King Hussein declared his son Prince Abdullah as his successor, with which Prince Hassan’s tenure as Crown Prince ended.
