US President Donald Trump announced the deal between India and America late on Monday night. He has reduced the tariffs imposed on India. This deal has been agreed upon after several days of negotiations. Now statements of political leaders from across the country have come out on this. Some have said it is good and some have said it is not in the national interest. In such a situation, we are sharing with you the reactions of those leaders.
How did the leaders of the ruling party react?
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi Said, ‘It was great to talk to President Trump. Glad that now the tariff on ‘Made in India’ products will be reduced by 18%. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, many thanks to President Trump for this wonderful announcement. When two major economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and opens up immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation. President Trump’s leadership is very important for global peace, stability and prosperity. India fully supports his efforts for peace. I look forward to working closely with them to take our partnership to new heights.
- Ravi Shankar Prasad Said, ‘The reduction in tariffs on Made in India products by the US to 18 percent will open up new global opportunities for Indian industry, MSMEs, youth and farmers, paving the way for a stronger trade partnership and shared development between the two countries.’
- Defense Minister Rajnath Singh Said, ‘This is a historic moment for India-US relations, as a historic trade agreement has been finalized, significantly reducing tariffs to 18% and beginning a new chapter of deeper and greater economic cooperation.’
- Home Minister Amit Shah Said, ‘This is a big day for India-US relations as the trade deal has been finalized at a much lower tariff rate of 18%, paving the way for stronger trade relations and mutual development.’
- J.P Nadda Said, ‘Late last night, the US President tweeted on tariffs and called PM Modi a true friend. After this, the PM thanked the US President by tweeting and talked about trade. The government will itself issue a statement on this trade agreement and will also discuss it.
How did opposition leaders react to the deal?
- Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi Said, ‘INDIA-US trade deal was an important deal. It was stuck for so long and India had become the nation with the highest tariff, after which it has been brought down to 18%, I welcome it. Whether the remaining aspects of this deal are in the national interest or not, I will leave it to the discretion of the public.
- BSP supremo Mayawati He said, ‘In the absence of proper information, it would be too early to make any immediate assessment because only after it is implemented on the ground, it will be known exactly how it will benefit the country, especially the Bahujans, the poor, labourers, farmers and women etc.’
- SP MP Dimple Yadav Said, ‘Was the tariff earlier also 18%? This raises questions that this has not been announced by the Indian government, US President Trump has announced this. The attitude of the US shows that our Foreign Ministry is not able to deal the way it should.
- RJD MP Manoj Jha Said, ‘We have done this trade deal or Trump has done it on the basis of ‘my way or the highway’. There was 2-3% tax on something, it was reduced to 50%, now it has been reduced to 18%. What is going on?… Have we mortgaged our entire sovereignty?’
- Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala Said, ‘America’s Agriculture Minister has said that in this trade deal, all the agricultural products of America will be sold in India at zero duty. There cannot be a bigger betrayal than this for the farmers of the country. Now American cotton will be sold in India without duty. The local maize, wheat, dairy products, almonds, walnuts and pistachios will be sold here. What will happen to the farmers of India? Doesn’t the government know that India bans agriculture and dairy products because we want to protect our farmers?
