The decision of global tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump was canceled by the Supreme Court on Friday i.e. 20th February. This order of the Supreme Court is being seen as a big blow to the Trump administration. Trump’s first reaction upon receiving the news of the court’s tariff decision was extremely angry. He looked calm on the outside but was full of anger on the inside.
Advisor gave note in the meeting
Donald Trump came to know about the US Supreme Court’s decision against global tariffs when he was holding a closed-door meeting with governors at the White House. According to Wall Street reports, during the meeting the advisor gave a note to the US President. On seeing which he said, “So this is a defeat?” The advisor confirmed that the court has declared the tariffs illegal.
Called the court’s decision shameful
Trump told the governors present in the meeting that he appeared calm on the outside but was filled with anger inside. According to people, he called the court’s decision shameful. After some time, Trump also interrupted the question-answer session and left saying that he had to prepare the answer.
American court declared global tariff illegal
The US Supreme Court canceled US President Trump’s global tariffs, declaring them illegal. The court said in its decision, Trump misused the emergency law and imposed tariffs beyond his authority. In a 6-3 decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the court said the legal basis used by the Trump administration does not permit such sweeping tariffs.
Although it is not yet clear whether the tariff money taken will be returned or not, the court has not mentioned it in the order. This is the first time that the court has canceled any decision of Trump’s second term.
Trump defended the policy
Within hours of the court’s decision, Trump defended his policy in a press conference. Trump said he would sign an order imposing “10 percent global tariffs under Section 122” and that other tariffs “will remain in full force and effect.” When asked about future rates of tariffs, he said, ‘Probably even higher…it depends on what we want to keep them.’
Called the court order disappointing
Trump described the court order as ‘extremely disappointing’. He also alleged that “foreign interests” influenced the court. However, he praised Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh who dissented.
