‘This budget is against women, farmers and education’, Mamata Banerjee furious at the government

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has described the Union Budget as directionless and anti-people. On Sunday (February 1, 2026), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget for the financial year 2026-27. Regarding the budget, Mamata Banerjee said that it lacks foresight and there is nothing in the budget for the common people and Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee spoke to journalists at Kolkata airport before leaving for Delhi. Regarding the budget, he alleged that there has been a huge cut in the funds allocated for key sectors in the budget. He also alleged, ‘This budget is directionless, lacks foresight and is dull and anti-people. This budget is anti-women, anti-farmer, anti-education and it is also against the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC)… There is nothing for West Bengal in the budget.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that there have been huge cuts in education funds and subsidies, as well as social security subsidies and fertilizer subsidies. This budget is a pack of lies… a symbol of incompetence. The economy will be completely derailed.

This will completely derail the economy. Mamata Banerjee stressed that the impact of the budget is clearly visible in the reaction of the stock market.

He said, ‘Sensex fell by more than 1,100 points, Nifty 50 went below 25,000. Its effect can be clearly seen. Trinamool Congress supremo Banerjee alleged, ‘What has he given (in the budget) for West Bengal? Nothing. They talk big but do nothing. Assembly elections are going to be held in West Bengal in the next few months.

Mamata Banerjee said that the Center has only repeated the already announced projects. He claimed, ‘I had mentioned the freight corridor in my railway budget of 2009. I had mentioned Dankuni and Amritsar. No expenditure has been spent on this for the last 15 years.

The Chief Minister stressed, ‘We had already announced six economic corridors. What he said about the three corridors is a lie. Mamta Banerjee said that investment is already coming in projects like Jungle Sundari Economic Corridor in Purulia. He said, ‘An investment of Rs 72,000 crore will be made for this corridor. Investors have shown interest in setting up cement, coal, leather and steel units.
