America Anti-Drone System: The American anti-drone system, which proved successful in the Russia-Ukraine war, is now being prepared to be sent to the Middle East. According to American officials, this step is being taken to deal with Iran’s drone threats. At present, America has an advanced safety system to stop missiles in the area, but stopping drone attacks still remains a challenge. For this reason, a plan has now been made to deploy a new anti-drone system.
Growing concern over Iranian drones
America has already used advanced systems like Patriot missile system and THAAD to stop missile attacks. However, defense officials say that effective security arrangements against drone attacks in the Middle East are still limited.
According to American officials, Iran’s Shahed drones are becoming a constant threat. Russia is also using the same drones in large numbers in the Ukraine war and they are being further upgraded from time to time.
How does the Merops system work?
The new system that is being sent to deal with drone threats is called Merops counter-drone system. Its specialty is that it uses the drone itself to bring down the drone. This system is small in size and can be easily transported in a mid-size pickup truck. In this, with the help of artificial intelligence, enemy drones are identified and then destroyed. The special thing is that even if there is interference in satellite or electronic communication, this system can still work.
Why is it difficult to identify drones?
Normal radar systems are designed to detect high-speed missiles. In such a situation, small and slow drones sometimes appear like birds or small planes on radar.
The Merops system has been specially designed to identify and destroy such drones. Apart from this, it is also economically more practical because shooting down a cheap drone with an expensive missile proves to be very expensive.
Challenge of expensive missile vs cheap drone
Jim Himes, a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee of the US Congress, said that America is quite capable of stopping missiles, but it is more difficult to stop drones coming in large numbers.
He told that the problem is that to shoot down cheap drones, many times very expensive interceptor missiles have to be used, due to which the defense cost increases significantly.
Will be deployed at many places in the Middle East
According to US defense officials, the Merops system will be deployed at different locations in the Middle East, including some areas where American troops are not directly present. This system has been created by Perennial Autonomy which is backed by former Eric Schmidt.
New strategy to deal with drone threat
Defense experts believe that the experiences of Ukraine and the Middle East show that drones are going to play a big role in future wars. In such a situation, America and its allies will have to rapidly adopt modern anti-drone technologies so that major threats can be stopped at low cost.
