The recent parliamentary elections in North Korea have once again attracted the attention of the whole world. The Workers’ Party of Korea, led by the country’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un, won almost an absolute majority in this election with 99.93 percent votes. This election was held in North Korea on Sunday this month (March 15, 2026), in which members of the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly were selected.
According to the country’s government news agency KCNA, not only did Kim’s party get huge support in this election, but the voting percentage also reached 99.99 percent, which is considered very unusual in any democratic system. However, what attracted people’s attention the most in this election is the remaining 0.07 percent votes which were not cast in support of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. In such a situation, it would be interesting to know which other person the people of North Korea supported during the rule of Kim Jong Un.
Who won 0.07% votes against Kim?
Actually, the electoral system of North Korea is quite different from the rest of the countries in the world. Here, there is only one candidate in every constituency, who is approved in advance by the ruling regime. In such a situation, voters have only two options, first they either accept the approved candidate, or second option they reject him.
This is the reason why no opposition party or leader got the 0.07 percent votes shown in the election results. Here is the percentage of people who voted ‘no’ or rejected the officially approved candidates.
North Korea accepted this after many decades
This time’s parliamentary elections in North Korea are being considered very special because after several decades, the country’s government media channel has publicly acknowledged that some people have voted against the candidates. According to reports, this is the first time since 1957 that the rejected votes have been made public.
