The issue of alleged atrocities on voiceless animals in Telangana is now resonating in the national capital. On Tuesday, a large group of animal rights activists went on a rampage in front of Telangana Bhawan in Delhi. Their anger was over the alleged brutal killings of thousands of stray dogs and more than a hundred monkeys in the state. Holding placards and raising loud slogans, these activists raised their voice against the Telangana government and demanded an immediate stop to this ‘massacre’.
‘Administration is destroying animals in the name of human-animal conflict’
The atmosphere was quite tense during the protests. Activists alleged that the state administration is adopting a policy of destroying animals in the name of reducing man-animal conflict, which is not only inhumane but also in violation of the law. There are clear orders from the Supreme Court and various High Courts that killing (kalling) of stray animals is illegal. In this context, the protesters reminded the government that the solution to the problem lies not in violence, but in science.
Strictly follow animal birth control policies
He clearly said that murder is not a solution. Their demand is that the government should strictly follow the ‘Animal Birth Control’ (ABC) policies. ‘Sterilization’ (birth control), ‘Vaccination’ (vaccination) and ‘Habitat Protection’ (habitat protection) were said to be the only permanent solutions to this problem. Activists said that the method of reducing the population through culling is temporary and cruel, whereas birth control can control the number of stray animals and their aggressive behavior in the long term.
Now the question is whether the Telangana government will understand the seriousness of these serious allegations and adopt humanitarian and scientific solutions while staying within the ambit of law? If this does not happen, this controversy may become even bigger and the administration may have to face criticism across the country.
