Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat’s hopes of winning an Olympic gold medal were dashed on Wednesday after she was disqualified from the women’s 50kg category for failing to meet the weight requirements.

Just hours before facing off against the USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the gold medal match, Phogat was found to be 100 grams overweight, resulting in her immediate disqualification. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) subsequently lodged an appeal with the United World Wrestling (UWW), the sport’s governing body, but to no avail.

UWW President Nenad Lalovic confirmed that the disqualification would stand, emphasizing the strict rules and regulations governing weight categories in wrestling. Despite the Indian team’s efforts and the overwhelming support from the nation, the decision remained irrevocable.

The news sent shockwaves through the Indian sporting community, with many expressing disbelief and disappointment over the turn of events. Phogat herself was understandably devastated by the outcome, having come so close to achieving a historic feat for Indian wrestling.
