There is news of violence breaking out once again in the troubled Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Here on Tuesday, two groups of protesters clashed with each other. Keeping in view the sensitivity of the situation, internet services have been stopped in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts. The police has resorted to lathi charge to disperse. For this we had to resort to tear gas shells. There is news of two people dead and at least eight people injured in this incident.

Officials say that despite the order of ‘bandh’, a large number of people came out on the streets in Kheroni Bazaar area. Children and women were also included in this. Their shops were set on fire by the mob on Monday. The agitators had gathered in Kheroni market demanding eviction of the encroachers from the tribal area.

CM said- I am keeping an eye on the situation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while posting on X, has said that I am closely monitoring the situation in West Karbi Anglong. It is very sad that two people lost their lives in today’s unrest. Additional security forces will be deployed in Kherani tomorrow to maintain peace. We are in constant touch with all concerned to restore normalcy and resolve the issues through dialogue. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. The government will stand with all affected families and provide all necessary assistance.

What information did the police officers give?
Police officials say that there was huge anger between both the groups. The security forces deployed in the area were trying to pacify them. He told that suddenly people from both the groups started pelting stones at each other. Many protesters, policemen and media persons were injured in this. He told that the situation in the area is tense. Additional forces have been sent to the spot. Earlier, the protesters had set two motorcycles on fire in the Kheroni area.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa described the situation as sensitive
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the situation in Karbi Anglong is very sensitive. Minister Ranoj Pegu is present there. I am confident that the matter will be resolved soon. However, after talks with Pegu, the protesters have ended their ongoing hunger strike on their demand for tribal areas. He was on hunger strike for 15 days.

Pegu spoke to the protesters and assured them that the government would soon hold tripartite talks on the issue, after which they ended their hunger strike. Pegu said that the Chief Minister will also participate in the talks. Earlier, Pegu had said that the matter can be resolved only through dialogue. He had said, ‘We are talking to both the protesters and the encroachers.’

The entire controversy is related to various political parties and social organizations. The agitators here are demanding eviction of people living illegally in the professional grazing reserve and rural grazing reserve in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.
