West Bengal News: Questions have once again arisen on the safety of passengers in long distance express trains. An incident of robbery took place in the reserved air conditioned (AC) compartment of Down Darjeeling Mail in the early hours of Saturday. The incident took place at around 3 am when the train was passing near Burdwan. A miscreant snatched the bag of a passenger in the B-1 coach of a moving train and escaped by jumping from the train.
The group of tourists was returning from NJP
According to the information, a tourist group of 19 people from Prashastha, resident of Domjur, Howrah, was returning from NJP. A miscreant suddenly snatched the bag of Shyamali Saha, who was sitting on seat number 20 of the same compartment, and immediately jumped from the moving train. Other passengers shouted “thief-thief” and tried to catch him, but the scoundrel disappeared from sight within a moment.
Shyamali Saha’s husband Gautam Saha told that about 50 thousand rupees in cash, an expensive mobile phone, Aadhar card and PAN card were kept in the bag. The family is shocked by this incident of theft. Passengers say that such incidents in AC coaches are very scary.
Questions raised on security arrangements
After the incident, there was anger among the passengers at Burdwan station. The passengers alleged that no security personnel were present in the AC compartment. There was movement of unwanted people and hawkers in the coach. Passengers also say that the compartment attendant keeps the door open at night, which shows gross negligence in security.
Information about the incident was given to the passengers by tagging Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on social media. On reaching Sealdah station, the passengers complained that they did not get any immediate help from the Railway Police. Later a complaint was lodged in Sealdah GRP.
