After SIR, a few months before the assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission (ECI) is going to publish the final voter list today on Saturday (28 February). At least 7.08 crore voters will be classified as ‘deleted’ or ‘pending’ in the voter list to be published today.
According to the draft voter list published on December 16, the number of voters reduced from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore, with more than 58 lakh names removed due to death, migration, duplication of names. In the second phase, 1.67 crore voters were heard, out of which 1.36 crore were marked for logical discrepancies and 31 lakh could not be mapped. The cases of about 60 lakh voters are still pending.
Process completed in 13 states/union territories
The Election Commission had announced SIR for the entire country on June 24 last year and till now the process has been completed in 13 states/union territories including West Bengal. However, this process has become a matter of political controversy before the elections in the state. The Election Commission says that this process is necessary to ensure regularity and accuracy. TMC has strongly opposed this and has secretly termed SIR as NRC.
Mamta Banerjee is protesting
Among the petitioners challenging the SIR order in the Supreme Court is West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who took an unprecedented step on February 4 and appeared in the Supreme Court demanding that the next assembly elections be held on the basis of the existing voter list of 2025. Banerjee alleged that lakhs of genuine voters are in danger of being left out of the list. This is not an amendment but a deliberate deletion of names from the list. He also said that names of genuine voters were secretly removed on the pretext of discrepancies.
