West Bengal Weather: New Year begins with severe cold, can snow fall in Darjeeling?

West Bengal Weather Update: The new year 2026 has started with bone-chilling cold in West Bengal. Heavy rains were seen in the last monsoon. It rained repeatedly starting from May till October. Now winter is also showing its glory. Cold is being felt continuously throughout Bengal. The last day of 2025 was the coldest day of the season.

How will the weather be for the next seven days?

There was an impact of cold in the new year also. On January 1, cold was felt in the entire state. There was dry weather in Bengal in the last 24 hours. The temperature was 2-3 degrees Celsius less at night. There was fog in the morning. There was fog at Kolkata airport also. According to Alipore Meteorological Department, similar weather will prevail in South Bengal for the next seven days.

However, there may be sporadic rain in North Bengal for two-three days. There is good news for tourists. There is a possibility of snowfall at higher places in Darjeeling. There will be dense fog in West and East Bardhaman, Birbhum, Medinipur, Jhargram, North and Twenty-four Parganas. It is expected that there will be light fog in the remaining districts. There will be light to moderate fog in North Bengal in the next 24 hours.

Temperature will fall again from 6-7 January

The minimum temperature at night will increase by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in the next two days. Meteorologists predict that there will be slight fluctuations in temperature due to western disturbance towards the north-west. However, this will not reduce the feeling of cold. Rather the cold may increase further. The temperature will fall again from 6-7 January. The mercury will come down as soon as the disturbance goes away.

Yesterday, on December 31, the minimum temperature was 11 degrees Celsius. Today, on January 1, the first day of the new year, the minimum temperature was 11.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature tomorrow may be 14 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature the day after tomorrow, on Saturday, may be 15 degrees Celsius. After that the temperature will fall again, the weather department estimates.

People are enjoying the cold to the fullest

Bengali people are enjoying the cold to the fullest. The whole of Bengal is in festive mood since the first day of the year. There is a festive atmosphere today from Kolkata to the districts. There are crowds of tourists at tourist places. Due to cold, there is a crowd of tourists in Alipore Zoo since morning. The children are happy. There are long queues at the ticket counter in Nico Park since morning. There is crowd at all the tourist places including Science City.
