On Tuesday, February 25, such a heinous incident came to light in Borampet area of Qutubullahpur in Medchal district of Telangana, which put humanity to shame. Here a 21-year-old mother brutally murdered her two-month-old son, the reason for which was the child’s continuous crying.
According to the police, the accused woman stuffed the child’s mouth with a cloth, tied his hands and legs and threw him into the burning firewood stove. The accident took place at a construction site under Dundigal police station area of Medchal-Malkajgiri district, where the family worked as labourers.
Revealed upon father’s return
The whole matter came to light when the child’s father Rajesh (also known as Rajendra) returned from work. Rajesh is originally from Madhya Pradesh and lived here as a migrant labourer. When he returned from work he found his son Surya burnt. Immediately the ground beneath his feet slipped and he immediately informed the police.

Dundigal police reached the spot, took stock of the situation and took the accused mother Mamta Ahirwar into custody. Police said that preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was distressed and suffering from mental stress due to the continuous crying of the child. It was in this anger and distress that he took this terrible step. The body has been sent to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem and the police have registered a case in this matter under necessary sections.

Families living on construction sites often have no provision for child care. Both parents go to work and young children have to be left in difficult circumstances. In such a situation, the burden of responsibility of home and children becomes heavy on women. This incident is also a big warning in the matter of mental health. Often ‘postpartum depression’ (stress after childbirth) is not taken seriously, especially in poor families where there is a lack of treatment and awareness.
