What is the real range of smartphone hotspot and Wi-Fi router? You will be shocked after knowing the truth

Smartphone Hotspot Vs WiFi: In today’s time, internet connection has become a necessity for every digital user. Whether working from home, attending online classes, watching web series or using social media, a fast and stable network is necessary everywhere. In such a situation, the hotspot and Wi-Fi router of the smartphone play an important role. But have you ever wondered how far their signal can reach? The answer depends on many things such as the capability of the device, the technology being used and the surrounding environment.

Smartphone hotspot range

When you turn on the hotspot in your phone, it transmits mobile data to other devices through Wi-Fi technology. Most new smartphones work on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Usually the range of hotspot inside the house is about 10 to 20 meters. If there is an open space and there is no wall or obstruction in between, then this distance can reach about 30 meters.

However, thick walls, furniture and other electronic devices can weaken the signal. The 2.4GHz band transmits signals over longer distances but the speed is slightly lower. Whereas 5GHz band gives faster speed, but its coverage is limited.

Wi-Fi router range

Wi-Fi routers are made to cover a larger area than smartphones. A typical home router can provide a signal up to about 30 to 50 meters indoors. In an open area this distance can be 90 meters or more depending on the model of the router and the strength of the antenna.

New-age routers with Wi-Fi 6 support and Mesh systems further improve coverage and stability. In Mesh Wi-Fi, many units are installed in different parts of the house or office, due to which dead zones are almost eliminated and signal is available in every corner.

Due to what reasons the range may be reduced?

The performance of a hotspot or router is affected by many things. Thick walls and floors can block the signal. Other wireless devices nearby may cause interference. Not having a router in the right place can also weaken the network. If more users are connected simultaneously, the speed may reduce. Weather can also affect outdoor setup.

Which is better for you?

If you have to share internet in a small room or for a short time, then the hotspot of the phone is sufficient. But for a big house, office or to connect more devices, Wi-Fi router proves to be a more reliable and stable option.
