WhatsApp is soon going to make a big change for Indian users to implement the rules of SIM binding. The company is bringing a new feature, which after regular intervals will check whether the WhatsApp account is linked to the active mobile number or not. If this feature detects that the account is not linked to an active SIM then that account can be restricted. Let us tell you that only a few months ago the government had made SIM binding mandatory.
How will the new feature work?
According to reports, this feature is currently in beta testing. Once rolled out, it will keep an eye on SIM validation and session renewal in the background. Currently, WhatsApp only verifies the phone number through the code at the time of log-in, but this feature will check if the SIM is active after regular intervals. For this, a 6 digit code may have to be entered every time the user session is renewed. If any account is not able to validate the SIM then it will be restricted. However, it is believed that this will not affect chat history and pending messages.
This change will happen only for Indian users
WhatsApp is bringing this feature only for Indian users. This will affect only numbers starting with +91. Let us tell you that at the end of last year, the government had asked all messaging apps including WhatsApp, Telegram and Snapchat to implement SIM binding and was given 90 days time for this.
What is SIM binding?
SIM binding means that messaging apps can only be accessed on a device that has the same SIM that was used to register for that platform. If that SIM is removed from that device, becomes inactive or another SIM is inserted in it, then the app will automatically log out the user. The government hopes that this will help in stopping fraud cases.
