These features of WhatsApp are already blocked in Russia
Russia had banned calling on WhatsApp and Telegram last year. Russia says that both these platforms are not sharing information with legal agencies in cases of fraud and terrorism. Similarly, Russia had also banned Apple’s FaceTime and Snapchat in December. It has been said in the order that these apps were being used for fraud and planning and carrying out terrorist activities.
What is the government saying about lifting the ban?
The Russian government says that if Meta follows its rules then lifting the ban can be considered. When the Kremlin spokesperson was asked whether the ban on WhatsApp would be lifted, he said that it is a question of following the law. If Meta follows the laws and starts talks with Russian authorities then an agreement can be reached. At the same time, if Meta is not ready to accept the laws of Russia, then there is no chance of lifting the ban on WhatsApp.
